Recorded at Cuicacalli Studios, Santa Barbara, California.
Mexico City native Luis Perez is a musician and folklorist with an interest in the instruments and musical traditions of Incan and Mayan civilizations. TALES OF ASTRAL TRAVELERS links Perez's interest in South American antiquity with contemporary sounds and recording technology. The result is a lilting mlange of flutes and percussion instruments, synthesizer, natural sounds, accordion, and strings.
Tracks like "Insectos" and "Amphibians," which feature recordings of the title creatures, draw us directly into the heart of the rain forest, while beautifully evocative cuts like "Aurora's Dream" send a kind of siren song on woodwinds. More conventional melodies are heard on the folk song-like "Distant Voices," but for the most part Perez explores ambient atmospheres on ASTRAL TRAVELERS, making it a fine way to journey through the future to the ancient past without leaving the comfort of your headphones.
