The Clancy Brothers' influence on folk music is enormous. Not only did they spearhead a 1950s revival in all things Irish, but they also impacted American folk music, most notably the early work of singer/songwriter Bob Dylan. In general, The Clancy Brothers stirred Irish national fervor overseas, and all this may be their greatest achievement. Their bawdy, almost theatrical approach to Irish folk tunes has become legendary in the U.S.
WRAP THE GREEN FLAG includes songs of dire loss, such as "Valley of Knockanure," songs of Irish patriotism like "A Nation Once Again" and "Johnson's Motor Car," and many humorous songs, including "New South Wales" and "Irish Rover." The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem have remained vital to the folk music genre in embodying a musical tradition that has resisted the rust of time. It could be argued that their music endures because their lyrical themes epitomize humanity at its most basic.
