This CD, the fourth of six in this valuable British trad jazz series, will be easily enjoyed by fans of freewheeling pre-bop and Dixieland jazz. Trumpeter Alex Welsh (whose playing sometimes emulates Wild Bill Davison) and his band (with trombonist Roy Crimmins and clarinetist Archie Semple) jam on ten features, including one surprise in Horace Silver's "The Preacher." Guitarist Diz Disley and vocalist Beryl Bryden have guest appearances. Disley's all-string quintet (with violinist Dick Powell) is then showcased on four songs, and trumpeter Mick Mulligan's Magnolia Jazz Band (with clarinetist Ian Christie and singer George Melly) wraps up the spirited show, which is drawn from four radio broadcasts. Valuable and spirited music. ~ Scott Yanow
