During the last five or six years of his life, Charlie Parker's live performances were frequently recorded and later on many of these sessions were released posthumously. This LP documents Charlie Parker's first visit to France and is mostly comprised of a quintet performance (with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Max Roach) originally recorded on a portable disc machine; the recording quality is quite erratic and there are breaks in a few of the songs where the fan had to turn the disc over. This LP concludes with part of an overcrowded blues (that is chiefly notable as the only example of a song boasting solos from both Bird and soprano great Sidney Bechet) and a broadcast version of "Ladybird" from the following year that features Parker with a French orchestra. It's a very interesting set from a historical standpoint but this LP is not all that essential. ~ Scott Yanow
