The Cannonball Adderley installment in the BLUE NOTE'S GREAT SESSIONS series collects three of the altoist's solo albums in one box set. 1962's CANNONBALL'S BOSSA NOVA finds Adderley soloing over bossa nova grooves with help from Brazil's Bossa Rio Sextet (which includes Sergio Mendes on piano). While enjoyable, the disc is not an essential Adderley purchase.
The other two discs included in the set, however, are among the artist's finest accomplishments, especially 1958's SOMETHING ELSE, which features Miles Davis in what may be his most dazzling appearance as a sideman. In general, the album is a post-bop masterpiece. Adderley's 1966 "live" album, MERCY MERCY MERCY, one of his most popular (recorded by famed producer David Axelrod and featuring an in-the-studio audience), is a potent dose of groove-centered soul-jazz and bop mastery. The latter two albums alone are worth the price of the set.
