Boyd Raeburn led one of the most interesting dance band outfits of the post-Second World War era, with arrangements influenced as much by Stravinsky and Debussy as Tommy Dorsey or Duke Ellington. But though Raeburn's outfit, with its band book of quirky, sometimes atonal numbers, made for a fascinating listen, it wasn't much fun to dance to, and, with only a small (though dedicated) following, the orchestra had disbanded by the late 1940s. This late-50s recording finds Raeburn in the company of such jazz greats as the bassist Oscar Pettiford and the trumpeter Charlie Shavers, playing more conventional material in the form of such standards as "I'll See You in My Dreams" and "By the Light of the Silvery Moon."
