CLASSICS is a specially selected compilation of two previously issued LPs: THE DAVE FRISHBERG SONGBOOK VOL. 1 (1981) and THE DAVE FRISHBERG SONGBOOK VOL. 2 (1983).
Personnel: Dave Frishberg (vocals, piano); Steve Gilmore (bass); Bill Goodwin (drums).
Recorded at Mountain Sound, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania in April 1981, December 1982 & March 1983. Includes liner notes by Dave Frishberg.
Though there are other song-oriented pianist-jazzmen, Dave Frishberg's highly crafted, highly sardonic songs are unique. A quintessential Easterner (though significantly not a Manhattanite), Frishberg is even drier than Mose Allison, but always humorous though he can be oddly wistful at times ("Do You Miss New York?" "Sweet Kentucky Ham"). He is also a fabulously prodigious pianist, less eccentric than his colleague Bob Dorough, and more fully fleshed-out than the minimalist Mose.
CLASSICS is the CD combination of two previously released Songbook LPs, and includes his classic "My Attorney Bernie" and the beatnik put-on "I"m Hip" (co-written with Dorough). And with his best songs all in one place, Frishberg's songcraft provides a telling contrast with another sardonicist, Randy Newman, which might also be the difference between popular music and jazz. For all his ironies, Randy Newman's work comes from the heart of the nation, even the politically angry HARPS & ANGELS. By comparison, Frishberg always remains the jazzman, an outsider looking in, no matter how much he loves baseball or Marilyn Monroe.
