There are at least 15 different Django Reinhardt compilations employing the title Djangology. This is slightly less formidable than the more than twenty that use the French spelling Djangologie. In a marketplace chock-full of reissue labels, Recall seems to strive to be the most rigorously anti-chronologic of them all. Recall's selection method seems to involve pulling the titles at random out of a hat and arranging them on the disc while blindfolded. Most of these fine gypsy swing performances were recorded by guitarist Django Reinhardt, violinist Stphane Grappelli and the Quintette of the Hot Club de France during the '30s; the earliest sides date from December of 1934. There are a handful of examples from the early '40s, and "Blues Clair" was recorded in August of 1947. The Reinhardt/Grappelli collaboration was and is one of the great partnerships in all of jazz history. Additional great musical presences are string bassist Louis Vola and reedmen Alix Combelle and Hubert Rostaing, whose paired clarinets make "Oiseaux des Iles" incredibly potent and exotic. This disc may serve as an ideal introduction to Django Reinhardt and his circle of European improvisers. Numerous intensive chronological reissue series have been lovingly prepared and maintained for those who wish to dig deeper and enjoy this music -- and the cast of characters who performed it -- in order of appearance rather than willy-nilly. ~ arwulf arwulf
