EASY LIVING is yet another of those paradoxical Sonny Rollins recordings on Milestone. On first listen, EASY LIVING seems like a frustrating combination of what now rules the airwaves under the label "smooth jazz" and a couple of solidly-read standards. Closer examination, however, proves there's more to this record than first meets the ear. "Isn't She Lovely" is, after all, a great piece of songwriting, and it's not like Rollins simply checks in and checks out without taking at least a look around at what the tune has to offer to the improviser.
"Arroz Con Pollo" makes up in hurtling momentum for whatever it may lack in harmonic complexity and "Down the Line," which could be a merely inoffensive slice of funk, instead has a persuasive head and opens up into some pretty loose blowing. While EASY LIVING has its strong points, it isn't the place to begin with Rollins--the uninitiated should check out classics like SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS, A NIGHT AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD or THE BRIDGE.
