At the age of 67, Art Blakey was still going strong in 1986 with a large edition of his Jazz Messengers. As usual, the group features young talents handpicked by Blakey to develop under his masterful guidance. Here the band showcases the talents of, among others, the future stars Wallace Roney on trumpet and Kenny Garrett on alto saxophone.
As with his many previous bands, Blakey's men perform crisp arrangements featuring powerful solos as well as stunning ensemble precision. All the while Blakey forcefully urges his charges on with a blazing ride cymbal beat and thundering accents on his drums. Although this set is not as electric as the group's many live recordings, it is nonetheless an excellent showcase for the discoveries that Blakey continued to mine as jazz's foremost talent scout even in his later years. Standout cuts include Garrett's bluesy title track, ex-Messenger Wayne Shorter's intricate "One By One," and the Latin extravaganza, Duke Ellington's "Caravan."
