Saxophonist Fred Anderson is approaching legendary status. Aside from his 50-year, remarkably prolific career as a musician, the octogenarian is known for his unique, robust playing that seamlessly combines elements of traditional and avant-garde jazz. Those qualities are proudly displayed on FROM THE RIVER TO THE OCEAN, which finds Anderson joined by percussionist extraordinaire Hamid Drake, guitarist Jeff Parker, bass player Harrison Bankhead, and others. The music is always adventurous, yet shouldn't be inaccessible or off-putting to free-jazz neophytes, thanks in large part to the superior musicianship throughout, which shines with a command of melody, groove, and group chemistry.

  • Critic Reviews
Magnet (p.118) - "Evoking the spirit dance of tenor giants John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, Anderson digs deep and conjures great gusts of improvisation without straying too far from the music's inner structure."
The Wire (p.47) - "[U]nique in Anderson's discography, taking him far from the bluesy, sometimes meandering territory he's made his own. This kind of adventurousness is admirable, especially when the results are this inspired."
Down Beat (p.75) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Drake's full arsenal is on display....The dominant tonal color here is dark, best represented on Anderson's 'Planet E'..."
JazzTimes (p.90) - "This set emphasizes subtlety over show, group interplay over individual scenery chewing, and ideas over pyrotechnics."
