PATTY WATER SINGS was the debut that inspired a whole generation of avant-garde vocalists, including Yoko Ono and Diamanda Galas. The seven serenely static originals on the first side--while ostensibly in a Billie Holiday jazz standard mode--are more like found objects than songs, but her infamous, screaming tour-de-force, "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair," remains a hair-raising performance to this day. While never entirely losing her connection to classic jazz singing, Patty Waters dove deep down into her dark, morose soul, and emerged with something resembling art. Burton Greene provides piano support.
