  • Credits

During the years immediately following the Second World War, singer and saxophonist Tex Beneke assumed leadership of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Dutton Vocalion's Prom Date samples recordings made between 1946 and 1951 by this immensely popular big band, heavily peppered with collegiate tunes like "On Wisconsin," "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi," "Alma Mater -- Cornell," "The Victory March of Notre Dame," "Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech," and, for those whose higher education would be inextricably intertwined with the Navy, "Anchors Aweigh." These are followed by various old-time jazz standards, harmless topical novelties, and themes from the motion pictures Riding High, Blues in the Night, and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Producer Michael Dutton is to be commended for having assembled 25 wholesome dance band recordings pressed during the interim connecting World War II with the war in Korea. ~ arwulf arwulf
