Personnel: Michel Camilo (piano); Anthony Jackson (contrabass guitar); Dave Weckl (drums).
Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York from January 18-20, 1993. Includes liner notes by Dr. George Butler.
Michel Camilo's RENDEZVOUS reunites the fiery pianist with his two original trio mates, Dave Weckl (drums) and Anthony Jackson (bass), for a rousing session full of energy and high spirits. These three virtuosos, who hadn't recorded together as a unit since Camilo's SUNTAN, are a perfect musical fit for each other. Each possesses seemingly unlimited facility on his respective instrument, as well as unbridled enthusiasm for muscular arrangements and relentless improvising. The result is an album that is not for the musically timid.
The obvious displays of chops abound with the aptly titled opener "Tropical Jam" and the odd-time rant "As One." It is the more intricate pieces, however, that really showcase this trio's strengths; the slow, creeping mambo of Ellington's "Caravan" and Camilo's moody title track feature a less bombastic, yet very powerful, side of these musical firebrands. The trio's uncanny simpatico in the complex passages of "Blacky" makes one wonder if there is not a single mind handling all three intricate parts. Other highlights of this dramatic session are the energetic "El Realejo" and the shuffling groove of "Albertina."
