Born in 1877, Mordechai Gebirtig was one of Poland's most gifted and significant early 20th-century Jewish composers and poets. He lived in Krakow until 1942 when he was murdered by the Nazis. In this 2005 concert recorded in Krakow's 17th-century Kupa Synagogue, New York jazz and avant-garde pianist Anthony Coleman performs a program of improvisations based on Gebirtig's popular pre-war songs. Coleman unerringly conjures both the hope and the aching sadness of Gebirtig's music, most notably on "S'Brent" ("It's Burning"), written after a 1936 pogrom, and the lyrical "Oreme Shnayderlekh" ("Poor Tailors").
