Think of this as sort of a truncated Spirituals to Swing set minus the gospel and blues performers. It's taken from those legendary John Hammond Carnegie Hall concerts of 1938 and 1939 and a stray 1938 studio date used in the original program. Either way, it's a treasure trove of red-hot performances from the Count Basie Band (and various members of his orchestra) and the Benny Goodman Sextet. The big-ticket jam here is Charlie Christian sitting in with Freddie Green, Walter Page, Jo Jones, Lester Young, and Buck Clayton on "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Good Morning Blues." ~ Cub Koda
