Personnel: Eddie Harris (vocals, tenor saxophone, electric saxophone, trumpet, piano); Rob Schneiderman, Jack Wilson (piano); Louis Spears, Herbioe Lewis (bass); Albert Heath, Eddie Marshall (drums).
Recorded live at Keystone Korner, San Francisco, California and Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, Chicago, Illinois in 1978 and 1983.
This CD from the short-lived Night label features the talented tenor Eddie Harris on two different occasions. From 1978 Harris is caught live at Keystone Korner in San Francisco, playing four superior standards plus his famous hit "Listen Here" while joined by pianist Jack Wilson, bassist Herbie Lewis and drummer Eddie Marshall. The three Chicago cuts from 1983 ("Chicago Serenade," "Sonnymoon for Two" and "Illusionary Dreams") not only showcase him on tenor but electric sax, some reed trumpet, piano and vocals along with pianist Rob Schneiderman, bassist Louis Spears and drummer Albert "Tootle" Heath. The recording quality is good and Harris sounds somewhat inspired on both occasions, emphasizing his roots in bebop while still sounding contemporary and original. ~ Scott Yanow

  • Critic Reviews
JazzTimes (6/91) - "Harris' ability to accumulate energy and swing on tenor saxophone and to vary dynamics in the course of a solo is demonstrated in `Chicago Serenade'...a taste of Harris's electric saxophone, resembles a pop/soul tune but develops irresistable jazz feeling."
Mojo (Publisher) (7/03, p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The electric sax pioneer really gets down on this album....Truly astonishing..."
