Bassist Ray Brown was an important contributor to the Concord label, not only as a player and bandleader, but also for convincing producer Carl Jefferson to sign Gene Harris and Ernestine Anderson, moves that launched both of their comebacks. This 1998 sampler CD features Brown leading various groups during 1974-77, 1984, 1987-88 and 1990-91. The earliest numbers ("The Flintstones Theme" and "After You've Gone") match Brown with guitarist Herb Ellis, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, pianist George Duke (in a couple of very rare straight-ahead outings), drummer Jake Hanna, and (on the latter tune) tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson. Later selections find Brown heading a trio/quartet with such sidemen as pianists Gene Harris, Monty Alexander or Dave Grusin, drummer Jeff Hamilton, tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore and guitarist Herb Ellis; "Like Someone In Love" is taken as a duo with pianist Jimmy Rowles. Tasteful and swinging music which will tempt listeners to go out and get some of the complete sessions. ~ Scott Yanow
