Giuseppi Logan Quartet: Giuseppi Logan (alto & tenor saxophones, flute, Pakistani oboe, bass clarinet); Don Pullen (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); Milford Graves (drums, tabla).
Recorded at Bell Sound Studios, New York on October 5, 1964.
Giuseppi Logan Quartet: Don Pullen, Eddie Gomez , Giuseppi Logan, Milford Graves.
Free-jazz reed player Giuseppi Logan released only two albums as a leader (both for ESP), before disappearing from the scene in the early 1970s. THE GIUSEPPI LOGAN QUARTET (1964) was Logan's first date; it features the excellent personnel of drummer Milford Graves, bassist Eddie Gomez, and pianist Don Pullen. Logan plays alto and tenor sax, clarinet, flute, and Pakistani oboe, and the music is both exploratory and staunchly in the free-jazz realm. Indian sounds and instruments wouldn't become popular until some years later, but Graves's occasional use of tabla on this set gives some of the music a vague South Asian feel.
