During the '60s, Brazil was positively littered with excellent musicians, but few had the precision and innovative flair of pianist Luz Ea, and none came together in a distinct group quite so well as Tamba Trio. The Miraculous Tamba Trio draws from four of Tamba Trio's '60s albums, including the majority of the first three. (The fact that it doesn't include "Mas Que Nada," their most well-known performance, is very odd, but must be a conscious choice since it appeared on one of the albums surveyed here.) At this point, Tamba Trio were attempting (and succeeding at) something much different than the vast majority of Brazilian artists; they were not particularly influenced by jazz but not by pop either. Ea and company often sounded as though they were creating their own classical and avant-garde repertoire within Brazilian music, resulting in intriguing soundscapes such as the eight-minute "Consolacion." Their precise, minor-key vocal harmonies accentuated the twists and turns of their musicianship, and they transformed new Brazilian classics by Ed Lobo, Baden Powell, Jobim, and Ea himself into beautiful, prosaic songcraft. ~ John Bush
