OK, this is IT: for the Coltrane fan who wants/needs (almost) everything, this 16-disc set has it all--all the music John Coltrane recorded for the Prestige label in the '50s, as a leader, co-leader, and sideperson. Excluded are the recordings he did as a member of Miles Davis' Quintet, which can be found on MILES DAVIS: CHRONICLE. The tunes are a wide-ranging mixture of originals ("Straight Street"), standards ("Lush Life," "It Might As Well Be Spring") and jazz originals by composers/pianists Tadd Dameron, Mal Waldron and Tommy Flanagan.
The cast of players includes legends like guitarist Kenny Burrell, sax gods of contrasting styles/schools like Sonny Rollins, Zoot Sims and Gene Ammons, and ex-Miles drummers Jimmy Cobb and Philly Joe Jones. Heart-rending ballads, hard-swinging bop, jam sessions, more thought-out compositions (Dameron)--it's ALL here. Save your dimes, take a couple of weeks off and dive in--this jumbo box contains some of the best (and just plain fine & worthwhile) post-Charlie Parker/pre-free-era jazz. (For the more edgier side of Coltrane, check out his Impulse recordings).
