This compilation is meant to serve as an introduction to Chet Baker's music and spans three decades with tracks from the mid '50s recorded in Paris, and tracks from the mid '60s and late '70s recorded in New York City. Baker's trumpet playing is clear, spacey, and lyrical, with long melodic lines. His later tone became breathier and more emotionally charged, yet retained subtlety.
Baker sings on five of these tracks. His vocals are simple and stick to the melody with just the subtlest variation. They are delivered in straight tones barely above a whisper. High points include a heartbreaking version of Don Sebesky's "You Can't Go Home Again" with quartet and strings, nine of Baker's classic Paris 1955 Barclay sessions, and a stark and sultry vocal and guitar arrangement of "You're Mine, You!" with Kenny Burrell.
