Though not often performed in the U.S., this opera is a perennial favorite among European audiences, and Heinrich Marschner is considered to be the most important German composer between Weber and Wagner. The title character refers to a Gnome King of traditional local lore, a story upon which the opera is based. The performance featured here is conducted by Renato Palumbo, and takes place in 2004 in the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari. The Queen is played by soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci, a renowned interpreter and opera star.
