Austrian theater director Walter Felsenstein built a unique reputation for himself, during the 1960s and early 1970s, by restaging traditional operatic works for film cameras, and shooting the productions on closed sets. He filmed the production featured in this release, Jacques Offenbach's Hoffmanns Erzhlungen, at the DEFA Babelsberg Studios in 1970. It stars Hanns Nocker as Hoffmann; Melitta Muszely in qsuadruple roles as Antonia, Giulietta, Olympia and Stella; and Rudolf Asmus as Doktor Mirakel, Lindorf, Copplius and Kapitn Dapertutto. The Chorus of the Komische Oper Berlin and The Orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin provide added musical accompaniment.
