  • Thumbpicking was popularized by Merle Travis in the early part of the 20th Century. Developed by incorporating banjo techniques on the guitar, melodies are played with the index finger, while the thumb picks out an accompaniment on the lower strings. It remains a staple of Muhlenberg County, KY, a locus of American bluegrass, old-timey and folk music. Compiled by guitarist Pat Kirtley, the lineup of musicians featured here are some of the best performers of this style, including Moon Mullins, Maurice Jones, and Bob Saxton, who have been playing since Merle Travis' time in the spotlight. Paul Mosely, Kirtley, and Steve Rector represent the new generation of thumbpickers, keeping the tradition alive while giving it a subtly new sound. This is a style of playing that captures a quintessentially American sound, full of the suffering, pain, and eerie sadness of the southern poor, as well as its whimsical side and its hopefulness.
