This compilation caters to fans of divo Plcido Domingo with three individual French-language operas toplined by the legendary tenor in the late 1970s and early 1980. It begins with a 1978 Vienna State Opera production of Georges Bizet's Carmen, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and starring Elena Obraztsova in the title role, Domingo as Don Jos, and Yuri Mazurok as Escamillo. The second production in the package, Camille Saint-Sens's Samson and Delilah, was mounted in 1981 by the San Francisco Opera, and directed by Nicolas Joel; it stars Domingo and Shirley Verrett in the title roles. Finally, Jacques Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann comes to life in a 1981 production via the magic of The Royal Opera Covent Garden; it stars Domingo as Hoffmann, Luciana Serra as Olympia, and Agnes Baltsa as Giulietta.
