  • "Pirates of Penzance" was based on the New York Shakespeare Festival's stage production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Both the stage and screen versions were directed by Wilford Leach. Most of the leading actors reprised their roles for the film, with the addition of Angela Lansbury. Filmed at the Shepperton Studios in England. Shot in Technicolor and Panavision. Sound by Dolby. "Pirates of Penzance" was released to pay television on February 17, 1983, the same day that it went into theatrical release.
