Robert Gass has always had an ecumenical approach to chant, choosing vocal pieces from a variety of spiritual and cultural traditions. Here he and his choir, On Wings of Song, cover two 14th century Spanish Catholic hymns, a traditional Turkish Sufi chant (that runs through the 99 names of God), a Jewish liturgical chant, Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu chants, The Lord's Prayer, and an alleluia set to Pachelbel's canon.
On Wings of Song has a wholesome, Protestant sound that works best on European numbers like the medieval hymns and the canon. This is a stirring collection of spiritual music, delivered with the utmost sincerity and solemnity.
