Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs had a big 1963 hit with the rave-up "Sugar Shack," produced by Buddy Holly's mentor, Norman Petty. Then they gradually faded into obscurity as their leather-jacketed garage-pop fare became less appealing to Beatles-addicted teenagers. This excellent compilation--with extensive liner notes and video clips--gathers some long-forgotten tracks that had been sitting untouched in Norman Petty's archives for decades. Though "Sugar Shack" is not included, an alternate take of their second-biggest hit, "Bottle of Wine," is available here for the first time. The compilation is truly a find for fans of pure, pre-British Invasion rock-and-roll.
