Crimson Records was created as a subsidiary of Lost Nite Records, a label started by ex-record store clerk Jerry Greene as a reprint conduit for the out of print doo wop and R&B singles he was finding, licensing, and reissuing (in time, Lost Nite evolved into today's Collectables Records, which continues to license material for reissue). This brief sampler (it only runs about 33 minutes in length) brings together some of the hits that subsequently appeared on the Crimson imprint, including a pair of gems from Andrew Lee & the Hearts, the hushed and beautiful "Island of Love," and the soulful "Never the Less," plus a vintage piece of street corner harmonizing, "Don't Leave Me Baby" by the Camelots, which features only handclaps as a rhythmic backing track. Fun stuff, and well-worth picking up at a budget price. ~ Steve Leggett
