Liner Note Author: Derek Barker .
He may be the epitome and template for the forever outlaw rock & roll pirate, but Keith Richards is also an ardent fan and historian of the music he loves, with a more than passing knowledge and understanding of blues, R&B, jazz, soul, and reggae (he's kept a home in Jamaica for years), and he used aspects of all of these in his own work as a solo artist and in his day job as the heart and soul of the Rolling Stones. This 27-song set collects the original versions of songs that have influenced Richards in one way or another, and it includes sides like Louis Armstrong's "Muskrat Ramble," Bo Diddley's "Mona," Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" (a cover of this tune was the Stones' first American radio hit), Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," and showing the Jamaican connection, the Folkes Brothers' "Oh Carolina," among other interesting tracks. It all adds up to a fun and varied playlist even without the Keith Richards angle. ~ Steve Leggett
