Recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, Rhode Island between 1963 and 1968. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin.
This is Part of Vanguard Records' Newport Folk Festival Classics series.
Nashville at Newport chronicles the legendary folk festival's gradual acceptance of country music by gathering a total of 31 Newport performances by country artists from 1963 to 1968. The disc opens with one song apiece from Jimmie Driftwood, Mother Maybelle Carter, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Next come several songs each by Hazel Dickens and Kirk McGee. Then there are extended sets (at least six songs) by Ike Everly and his son Don (of the Everly Brothers), Roy Acuff and His Smoky Mountain Boys, and Johnny Cash. Although the recording quality is sometimes not quite up to par, the performances are excellent, and the historical value of the music is undeniable. ~ Steve Huey
