Half of this set consists of tunes Hawkins recorded in the early '50s, prior to the song that will be forever associated with him: "I Put a Spell on You." At this point, Hawkins had all of his trademark vocal mannerisms in place as well as a distinctive songbook of self-penned numbers. He was already singing songs rife with B-grade horror-film references and loopy exotica.
One listen to "Baptize Me in Wine" makes it clear that you're in the company of one man's well-developed vision. Other players on this and a few of SCREAMIN's other songs include Red Prysock (tenor saxophone) and Tiny Grimes (guitar). The album is rounded out with an assortment of tracks dating through the '60s and right up to 1970. A cover of Paul McCartney's "Monkberry Moon Delight" shows that this guy really knew how to pick a song. "I Hear Voices" should have been another hit for Hawkins. Alas, his recordings after the '50s languished, though he continued to tour regularly.
