Although Oneida loves its psychedelic and experimental references, the Brooklyn-based band never sticks with one type of sound. On the STEEL ROD EP, garage, blues, and a bit of 1960s soul all get their say. In the organ driven din, guitars, bass and drums pound out repetitious blues riffs overlaid with squawky vocals. Skronking like a sax or squeaking like a pre-pubescent boy on the first song "XXY", the singer can be compared to Make Up frontman Ian Sevonius.
Unlike Make Up, however, Oneida tends to add in more freak outs, odd sounds, and less structure. Not all of STEEL ROD EP is cacophonous, however. The soul/gospel of "Tennesee" brings in the choir and the familiar singing/talking vocals. The Creedence Clearwater Revival cover of "Sinister Purpose" will either leave you screaming in horror or bobbing your head in classic rock bliss. Where is the experimental fuzz and psychedelic guitar? It's on the hidden track, of course.
