    Hip-O Records' 2008 Dean Martin holiday release A Very Cool Christmas is a retitled reissue of the Dean Martin Christmas Album, recorded and originally released by Reprise Records in 1966, plus one extra track, a medley of "Peace on Earth" and "Silent Night." In his mid-`60s prime performing with country-pop arrangements courtesy of Bill Justis and Ernie Freeman, and with his usual producer, Jimmy Bowen, behind the boards, Martin is in a typically easygoing, good-natured mood on these tracks, many of which he recorded previously for Capitol Records in the '50s. He sings the seasonal material with the same nonchalance he gave to pop music of the period. The extra track, produced by Sonny Burke, is a more reverent reading, and though it pads this short CD out to a still-brief 28 minutes, it's really in a different mood than what it follows. ~ William Ruhlmann
