EASY COME, EASY GO is Marianne Faithfull's second album with producer Hal Willner, coming over two decades after 1987's STRANGE WEATHER. Like its predecessor, this is a collection of covers of songs both old and new, but STRANGE WEATHER (like its 1980s predecessors BROKEN ENGLISH and DANGEROUS ACQUAINTANCES) was the sound of a singer still relatively new to sobriety after years as one of rock's most notorious addicts, with all the rough edges and hard-fought angst that implies. The far more elegant EASY COME, EASY GO finds a serene, 62-year-old Faithfull decades removed from her tortured depths, singing with an almost regal calm. Faithfull's guests include Nick Cave (on a duet of the Decemberists' "The Crane Wife 3"), Cat Power, Antony Hegarty, Rufus Wainwright, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle.

  • Critic Reviews
Spin (p.78) - "[W]hen she interprets material that matches the drug-ravaged wreckage of her vocal chords, she kills..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.67) - "Her interpretations of songbook classics from the likes of Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, and Smokey Robinson are gratifyingly intimate and rough-hewn..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[S]he shines on songs that seem more personal to her -- the languorous 'Black Coffee,' for instance, or the desperation of Morrissey's 'Dear God Please Help Me.'"
Record Collector (magazine) (p.96) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Her burnished tones caress a panoramic variety of artists...while the music veers between starkly intimate to widescreen Bad Seeds-style blitz."
Uncut (magazine) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's an extravagantly orchestrated set, but with Marc Ribot as lead guitarist and the Dirty Three's Jim White on drums,, the playing remains off-kilter, to quite thrilling effect."
