This 2009 release is ostensibly cabaret singer and pianist Daryl Sherman's tribute to the songwriter-lyricist Johnny Mercer on the occasion of his 100th birthday. But one listen to the opener, "I'm Shadowing You," and it's clear that the real tribute here is to the recently deceased jazz cabaret icon Blossom Dearie. Sherman even name-drops "Blossom and me" towards the end of the song. And throughout this well-played and -sung set, this heir presumptive demonstates the light touch, wit, and swinging musicality that were Blossom Dearie trademarks throughout her long career. Not to overshadow Mercer completely, the songs themselves are well-chosen, some of them familiar ("Midnight Sun," "Come Rain Or Come Shine," "Charade"), some much less so ("I'm Shadowing You" being one example). Sherman also receives help from fellow jazz cabaret luminaries such as bassist-vocalist Jay Leonhardt (who played with Dearie as well), guitarist Howard Alden, and two very special guests--pianists Marian McPartland and Barbara Carroll (a cabaret icon herself) who back the singer on one tune each.
