Bobby Darin's breakthrough album would be worth purchasing if all it contained were his hit versions of Brecht and Weill's "Mack the Knife" and his sublime, swinging "Beyond the Sea," the English version of Charles Trenet's "La Mer." But this 1959 set also features the beautiful, lovelorn "Through a Long and Sleepless Night," which runs a close second to Frank Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" in the aching-ballad sweepstakes, as well as the similarly melancholy sentiments of "Where Is the One." Sinatra's influence is also apparent in both Darin's delivery and the album's production, which features arrangements by the talented Richard Weiss, but here Ol' Blue Eyes' world-weary experience is replaced by Darin's pop roots, as well as his irrepressibly youthful energy, which invigorates many of these songs--notably the Latin-infused tour-de-force of a title track--giving them an unmistakably early-'60s, modernist stamp.
