This entry in the Eccentric Soul series of obscure U.S. regional soul label re-releases uncovers Florida's Deep City label, which provided a springboard for the musical careers of R&B greats like Betty Wright, whose early-1970s "Clean Up Woman" was one of the seminal records of the disco years, and sweet soul singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, whose early-'70s stomper "Stealing in the Name of the Lord" fueled many a Northern Soul dance floor. Wright's slow burning "Paralyzed" and Kelly's "The Upset" are two of the highlights of this fascinating compilation, which also includes such forgotten talents as Helene Smith, whose charming, pop-flavored "I Am Controlled By Your Love" is a minor mid-'60s classic.

  • Critic Reviews
No Depression (p.119) - "What makes this collection fascinating is the chance it affords listeners to hear the earliest efforts of performers such as Clarence Reid and Betty Wright....This is wild, hot stuff..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With songs] that throbbed due to an incandescent artistry; one that accentuated expression and intensity and languished in warm, melancholic, oozing agony."
