Eric Burdon & War: Eric Burdon (vocals); Howard Scott (vocals, guitar); Bee Bee Dickerson (vocals, bass); Charles Miller (flute, tenor saxophone); Lee Oskar (harmonica); Lonnie Jordan (piano, organ); Harold Brown (drums); Dee Allen (conga, percussion).
Originally released on MGM (4663) in April, 1970. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
After great success with the blues-rock group the Animals, Burdon changed the direction of the band, scoring psychedelic hits like "Monterey" and "San Franciscan Nights." Later, having lost interest in flower-power rock, he cast about for other options. In Los Angeles in 1969, he met harmonica player Lee Oskar and the club band Nightshift, and combined forces with them to create War, a multi-ethnic band that was a true departure from his work with the Animals.
ERIC BURDON DECLARES WAR hit the Billboard chart in May 1970, staying there for 27 weeks and peaking at #18. The song "Spill The Wine" was a top-10 hit.

  • Critic Reviews
Mojo (Publisher) (12/00, p.51) - "...Burdon recruited Danish harmonica ace Lee Oskar and Long Beach band Niteshift, and renamed them War. Many of their songs were jams or extended workouts, but with War that was hardly a drawback..."
