Having relocated to New York from his native Manchester, England, a few years earlier, A Guy Called Gerald Simpson released ESSENCE in the year 2000. The album was departure in that it largely contained actual songs rather than club-based material, and Simpson enlisted the likes of Lady Kier from Dee-lite and Wendy Page. Throughout the record, the era's typical drum 'n' bass sound blends perfectly with languid, soulful vocals, which makes for a curious and moving juxtaposition.
Critic Reviews
Spin (9/00, p.190) - 8 out of 10 - "...The sound may be 5 years old, but ESSENCE's insistence that jungle left something behind back in '95 is a major part of its appeal..."
Q (10/00, p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Eerily introverted one moment, warm and open the next, ESSENCE demands concentration but makes for an intriguing, rewarding experience."
Uncut (10/00, p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A sci-fi futurist panorama of soulful drum'n'bass and scrambled, Tricky-esque trip-hop..."
Alternative Press (10/00, p.84) - 4 out of 5 - "...A bona-fide pop album - smokingly soulful...and armed to the teeth with hooks and refrains..."
CMJ (8/14/00, p.3) - "...A long-overdue and superbly executed collection of songs..."
Melody Maker (8/1/00, p.50) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Brilliantly edgy, dark stuff."
