This superb two-disc compilation pinpoints Herbie Hancock in an important transitional mode. Hancock's 1960s solo recordings, which comprise the bulk of this set, build on the exploratory hard bop he helped craft with Miles Davis's second great quintet, pushing in one direction toward wild, mercurial improvisation; and in the other toward pared-down, heavily syncopated rhythms. It was at the intersection of these two modes that Hancock found his sound, and JAZZ TO FUNK documents the search for that space perfectly. Many of the era's best musicians, including Don Cherry, Jack DeJohnette, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Jim Hall appear on these tracks. And several rare cuts, including outtakes from Hancock's contributions to the 1966 film BLOW-UP, are also included.
