In the mercurial world of pop music, there are precious few artists who can truly be labeled survivors; performers who successfully weather changes in times and tastes while managing to reinvent themselves for new generations of fans. From her days with Sonny in the '60s to her divahood at the end of the '90s, Cher is undeniably a survivor. The first single off LIVING PROOF, "Song for the Lonely," attempts to pick up where her mega-hit "Believe" left off, as a simultaneously anthemic and danceable pop confection with an emotional, reach-out message. Similarly, "A Different Kind of Love Song" makes use of the quirky vocal effects that made "Believe" so popular. But amid all the dance material, there's the sorrowful R&B balladry of "Rain, Rain" and the Latin pop flavor of "Body to Body, Heart to Heart" ensuring that LIVING PROOF never becomes monochromatic. With chart success and fond fans a given, it's clear that Cher has come out on top yet again with this solidly radio-ready offering.
Rolling Stone (3/28/02, p.68) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Unlike house muisc or modern R&B, Cher's 21st-century disco is built on fully fleshed songs and detailed arrangments, and the studio wizardry is even grander than before..."
Entertainment Weekly (3/15/02, p.76) - "...Turns back time to the disco era, and ratchets up the vocal tricks....she still has feeling..." - Rating: B+
