After sitting out most of the sixties due to a mid-decade career slump and some daunting personal problems, Alexander returned in 1972 with this impressive collection of soulful R&B. Though more gospel oriented than the sublime pop-soul style the singer perfected on early sixties hits like "Anna" and "You Better Move On," RAINBOW ROAD showed Alexander to be a truly capable, inventive vocalist who could hold is own with the top soul artists of the day.
On RAINBOW ROAD, Alexander runs through a variety of styles, ranging from a driving version of "Burning Love"--a track that later became a big hit for Elvis Presley--to "Thank God He Came," an intense, moving song of devotion that allows Alexander to return to his gospel roots. Though songs like "In The Middle Of It All" hint at the pop-soul majesty of his early hits, RAINBOW ROAD is an early seventies soul album that has stood the test of time. It offers a fascinating look at the career of one of the unsung greats of soul and R&B.
