REGGAE GOLD, a lengthy, 16-track compilation widely advertised on television at the time of its 1993 release, is a fine sampler of early '90s reggae. By the time-period covered on this disc, reggae had moved away from the experimental tendencies of the '70s and early '80s into a position similar to that occupied by its precursor, rock steady, in the late '60s. Early '90s reggae was a smooth and unabashedly commercial music, heavily influenced by contemporary North American and British R&B but with a Caribbean twist. REGGAE GOLD, which features such massive hits as Maxi Priest's "Dreaming," Pam Hall's "I Will Always Love You," and the rap-influenced toasting of Buju Banton in "Wickie Dickie," his duet with the sultry "Nadine Sutherland, exemplifies this strain of reggae.
