On the heels of his solo debut, TOMORROW RIGHT NOW, the former Antipop Consortium lyricist Beans takes listeners on another journey through an oddball world of futuristic trip-hop over 13 eclectic tracks on SHOCK CITY MAVERICK. With no samples, no guest appearances, and an assortment of techno-inspired beatscapes, SHOCK CITY MAVERICK is an inspired exercise in unconventional hip-hop. The hypnotic "I'll Melt You" sees Beans opening a fierce three-minute verbal onslaught by proclaiming himself "the Ornette Coleman of this rap shit" as well as "the link between Suicide, Sun Ra, and Bambaataa."

  • Critic Reviews
Spin (p.124) - "[H]e's more grounded, and his evasive, abstract beats underpin his vocals less randomly." - Grade: B+
Uncut (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Here, Beans returns to his roots..."
The Wire (p.50) - "With its showers of synths descending like a volley of emergency flares, a recurring buzz like a fruitfly on the eardrum and Morricone-esque peals of desolation, 'Papercut' is indication aplenty that Beans brings more to the party than a beatbox and a crate of vinyl."
CMJ (p.5) - "Dishing up avant-rap mayhem over synth and drum machine-driven hip-hop, he makes minimalist electrofunk..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Beans grounds his solo flights of esoteria with a wickedly slanted take on hip hop's dancefloor-savvy....SHOCK CITY MAVERICK is the sound of Beans returning to the hip hop that hatched him, remaking it in his image."
