Peanut Butter Wolf's Stone's Throw label has become synonymous with quality in hip-hop's underground. For Wolf, combining his production skills with the talents of such mic manipulators as Rasco was nothing short of a dream come true. He made the dream brighter by adding Likwit crew collaborators and underground heroes Lootpack onto the roster. Thanks in part to the rock-solid foundation of chunky beats laid down by group member Mad Lib, SOUNDPIECES: DA ANTIDOTE is certainly one of the best indie hip-hop releases of the decade.
"Long Awaited" is the strongest cut on an album that also features the verbal chin-checking of underground heroes Dilated Peoples. Though there are numerous cuts on which the members of Lootpack tackle the mic without any outside help, it's often the guest tracks that prove best. Among the highlights is "Likwit Fusion," a cut that features guest stars the Alkoholiks. A feel-good album dedicated to the basics of hip-hop music (strong beats and clever lyrics), SOUNDPIECES: DA ANTIDOTE is a perfect example of "backpack rap" at its best. Here, good music wins out over the cliched topics and convoluted messages so popular in late-'90s hip-hop.
Spin (9/99, p.198) - 8 out of 10 - "...witty tracks enhance the verbs....Madlib's well-dug and cohesive production turns LP jabs into zingers..."
Alternative Press (9/99, p.104) - 3 out of 5 - "...topnotch head-nod fodder for b-boys of any coast..."
The Wire (7/99, p.66) - "...they 'break MCs on contact' by using the 'laws of Physics'....the production...is a killer..."
Rap Pages (11/99, pp.160-2) - "...These cats...rock abstract rhymes on a search-and-destroy mission for sucka emcees over Madlib's breathtaking production....If you're looking for a prodigious assortment of beats with a straight-up chaser of rhymes...the Lootpack has the cure-all..." - Rating: C
