In the mold of "Close the Door," the smoldering hit ballad from this album's predecessor, LIFE IS A SONG WORTH SINGING, Teddy Pendergrass's third solo effort--titled simply TEDDY--starts off with a handful of seductive bedroom slow jams. It's no surprise that Pendergrass excelled at lovers' ballads: the combination of his husky croon and Philly International's sweet, sophisticated production is enough to make even the strongest knees go weak.
The Gamble & Huff-penned tunes that lead off the album, "Come Go With Me" and "Turn Off the Lights," are two of Pendergrass's greatest downtempo tracks. In their arrangements, production, and especially Pendergrass's performances, they radiate the assurance of a team that knows exactly what it's creating. The latter half of TEDDY picks up the tempo considerably with disco-soul cuts like "If You Know Like I Know" and the buoyant, driving "Do Me." Alongside his sophomore release, TEDDY is one of the singer's best and most consistent studio releases.
