Though THE SOURCE PRESENTS HIP HOP HITS VOL. 6 doesn't feature quite the same high percentage of crossover chart-toppers as the fifth volume in the series, the disc does represent a diverse and hard-hitting cross-section of 2002's best-selling hip-hop artists. Interestingly, the album also confirms a massive shift in rap's power structure. Though nearly half of the 18 tracks are by East Coast rappers, and there's a healthy sampling of Dirty South, there is virtually no West Coast rap represented anywhere on the compilation. That said, the influence of seminal California artists like N.W.A. and 2Pac echoes in the preponderance of gangsta themes, making THE SOURCE PRESENTS HIP HOP HITS VOL. 6 a fascinating glimpse of the mainstream's continuing assimilation of the hip-hop underground.
