On The Auteurs' third release, AFTER MURDER PARK, singer, guitarist, and songwriter Luke Haines abandons the light-hearted whimsy of his previous efforts in favor of darker, more brooding territory. The harder sound was no doubt influenced by super-producer and unlikely collaborator Steve Albini. With the darker sound comes more macabre subject matter, as evidenced by song titles like "Unsolved Child Murder" and "Tombstone." While AFTER MURDER PARK is not The Auteurs' most accessible work, it showcases Haines's cohesive orchestration along with his impeccable maturation as a songwriter.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (5/16/96, p.68) - 3 Stars - Good - "...This third release is like a rock & roll dispatch from a parallel universe: glam, punk, early Bowie and the Beatles being taken apart and put back together all wrong..."
Spin (5/96, p.111) - 7 - Flawed Yet Worthy - "...produced by Steve Albini, digs deeper into guitar noise, giving some edge to that Morrissey-fed voice..."
    Alternative Press (6/96, p.69) - 4 - Well Done - "...bloody good..."
Option (9-10/96, p.92) - "...[Luke Haines] can deliver his lyrics with all the venomous power of spittle from the lips of Joe Strummer....working with Steve Albini for a fortnight at Abbey Road, Haines and cello-playing partner James Branbury have kicked up a raw sound..."
NME (Magazine) (2/24/96, p.46) - 8 (out of 10) - "...The fact that [The Auteurs] are unafraid to be cerebral when necessary really elevates AFTER MURDER PARK into being...intriguing....Every song is a precisely drawn melodrama with tendencies toward the nasty, doom-laden of the finest records of 1996 so far..."
